Between the communities of Ormylia and Vatopedi, the Holy Cross and Patriarchal Congregation of the Annunciation of the Theotokos (female monastery), known as the monastery of Ormylia, was established in 1974. The monastery, an Agioreite share of the Holy Monastery of Simonos Petra, developed rapidly and today, under the shadow of the Agioreite spiritual heritage, it is the largest women’s monastery in Greece. The Sisterhood with more than 120 nuns is a model of monastic life in Greece with universal influence.
Space and time in the Monastery of Ormylia has stopped centuries ago, in the Byzantine era. The wonderful facilities with the mosaic floors crafted by the nuns and the hagiographies captivate the visitor, while the traditional Greek coffee and Turkish delight in the archontariki, offered with a smile and kindness by the sisters, soothe the faithful who have the opportunity to touch their problems there outside world.
