Ormylia

It is the oldest settlement in Halkidiki, as human presence in the area has been continuous from the Neolithic Period to the present day. The settlement was known as Sermyli during the Classical period, Ermyli – Ermylia during the Medieval period, and is known today as Ormylia.

Ormylia is a town belonging to the Municipality of Polygyros, with a population of 3,979 inhabitants according to the 2011 census. It is located 7 km from the coast of Toroneos Gulf, 87 km from Thessaloniki, and 27 km from Polygyros.

The climate of the area is mild and ideal for the cultivation of fruits, vegetables, and olive trees. Today, the main occupations of the local residents are olive cultivation and tourism.

 

Points Of Interest:
The central church of Ormylia, dedicated to Saint George, was built in 1818. Other notable landmarks include the old primary school (built in the early 1900s), as well as the small chapels of Saints Apostles, celebrated on June 29, Saint George located on the hill bearing the same name, Holy Trinity, and Saint Demetrios. On the road leading to Ormylia, visitors can also see the old windmill standing on a hill, a characteristic landmark of the area.
