Located between the communities of Ormylia and Vatopedi, the Holy Patriarchal and Stavropegic Monastery of the Annunciation of the Theotokos, widely known as Ormylia Monastery, was established in 1974. A dependency of the Holy Monastery of Simonopetra on Mount Athos, it developed rapidly and today, inspired by the spiritual heritage of Mount Athos, it is the largest women’s monastery in Greece. With more than 120 nuns, the sisterhood is regarded as an outstanding example of monastic life and enjoys international recognition.
At Ormylia Monastery, visitors experience an atmosphere that reflects the timeless traditions of Byzantium. The impressive monastery complex, adorned with exquisite mosaic floors and beautiful frescoes created by the nuns, leaves a lasting impression. Guests are traditionally welcomed with Greek coffee and loukoumi (Turkish delight) in the reception hall, offered with warmth and hospitality by the sisters.
